Deisler.
Five wood-engravings on five sheets (each 260 x 245 mm.), printed on one side only. One folded sheet of text, [4] pp. Orig. printed orange thick paper portfolio (270 x 245 mm.). [La Plata]: 1966.
One of 100 copies, an extremely rare portfolio of wood engravings by Chilean artist Guillermo Deisler (1940-95), published years before his exile precipitated by Pinochet’s takeover. According to WorldCat, there are three examples in North America. This portfolio was the first of a series published by Edgardo Antonio Vigo’s Editorial Diagonal Cero; others were made for graphics by South American artists such as Unhandeijara Lisboa, Albino Fernández, Nelia Licenziato, Jose Altino, Helios Gagliardo, Vigo, José Rueda, Dorian Gray Caldas, etc.
The text sheet opens with an introduction by Waldo Rojas and a concise biography of the artist. From 1963 to 1973, Deisler operated Ediciones Mimbre which published works by young and emerging Chilean artists. The five expressive plates in this portfolio, all from 1965, are entitled: “Pisando,” “Manifiesto,” “El Toilette de la Prostituta,” “El Numero,” and “El Trauco.” They exemplify his virtuosity with the medium; examples of Deisler’s work from this period in any form are very scarce.
In near fine condition; the plates are fine and fresh, a little wear and small dampstain to the portfolio.
