The Inaugural Exhibition
Katalog 1/68: Peter Brüning (3 October-2 November 1968).
Illus. throughout (some in color). [11] leaves. Square 4to, pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Aachen: 1968.
A rare Peter Brüning (1929-70) exhibition catalogue; WorldCat records just three examples in North America. This was the Gegenverkehr’s first exhibition and the artist’s engagement with traffic imagery and cartography influenced the naming of this intrepid new public gallery founded by Klaus Honnef, Will Kranenpohl, Rune Mields, Benno Werth, and Helmut Walbert.
“The newly founded Kunstverein launched with an exhibition of Brüning’s new work on sign systems deriving from cartography and traffic signs, which he was presenting for the first time in a public institution.”–Brigitte Jacobs van Renswou, “1968-2970: Gegenverkehr – Zentrum für aktuelle Kunst,” Sediment 30: Klaus Honnef, From Conceptual Art to Photography, (2019), pp. 18-19.
The catalogue is richly illustrated with photographic reproductions of Brüning’s recent works, and has an introductory essay by Honnef, biographical timeline for the artist, list of solo and group exhibitions, and list of exhibited works.
Near fine.
