The rare catalogue for an exhibition of Duchamp-Villon’s work at Galerie Pierre; WorldCat records only three examples in North America. Pierre Loeb (1897-1964) opened Galerie Pierre in 1924 to champion Surrealist and Cubist artists, and maintained a close relationship with Picasso in the 1920’s and 30s. Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918) was an accomplished sculptor who served in the French army in World War I. In 1916 he contracted typhoid fever for which he was treated in a military hospital in Cannes until his death two years later. Despite his worsening condition in his final years, he completed a small number of important Cubist sculptures, two of which, from 1917, were presented in this exhibition.
A total of 33 of the artist’s sculptures were shown, the checklist also includes notes on provenance, one-third of the works were loaned from museums and collectors. Five of them are depicted with full-page illustrations. The Préface was contributed by the poet and critic André Salmon (1881-1969) for this catalogue, he writes (in trans.): “Duchamp-Villon translated his time and drew the whole future.” The rest of the text consists of contemporary reviews of the artist’s work.
