Lehren und Lernen als Auffuehrungskuenste/Teaching and Learning as Performing Arts… [Edited by Kasper König].
Black & white illus. 228 pp. Large oblong 4to, printed yellow card covers, metal spiral-bound. Cologne & New York: Verlag Gebr. König, 1970.
The very rare first edition of this influential “interactive” book chronicling early performance art and Fluxus, composed by Filliou with the participation of John Cage, Allan Kaprow, Benjamin Patterson, George Brecht, Dorothy Iannone, Diter Rot, Joseph Beuys, etc. It includes interviews with the aforementioned artists along with imaginative text contributions and activities proposed to the reader, all in parallel English and German. According to WorldCat, this title is not held by any North American library.
Filliou considered this a “multi-book” and writes on page 7: “The writing – space provided for the reader’s use is, through the simple device of dividing the page in two, exactly the same as that taken by the author. Of course the reader is free not to make use of his writing space. But it is hoped that he will be willing to enter the writing game as a performer rather than as a mere outsider. For this study is about permanent creation and audience participation. It is authored (co-authored, with each reader who wishes it) by man who believes in trying to close the gap between the artist and his public, and joining them in a common creation…”
In fine condition. A French translation was published by Lebeer Hossmann in 1998 with the title Enseigner et apprendre, arts vivants, followed by a re-edition of the present book by Primary Information in 2014.
