Jim Turrell (9 September-9 October 1967).
Three black & white illus. Single cardstock sheet forming [6] pp. Pasadena: Pasadena Art Museum, 1967.
The uncommon catalogue for Turrell’s first solo museum exhibition, which was hosted by the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum). Born in Los Angeles, Turrell (b. 1943) graduated from Pomona College in Claremont in 1965, and created his first light piece the following year. Three of the artist’s Projection Pieces are illustrated with full-page reproductions — Porter-Powell (1967); Tollyn (1967); and Afrum (1967). John Coplans (1920-2003), director of the museum, has contributed an essay on the artist’s practice, and he writes: “Turrell’s images are not only static, non-repetitive and absolute, but they are also highly subjective…he uses luminosity not as a sculptor uses material to create three dimensional form, but illusionistically, that is, in a similar manner to a painter who uses paint on canvas.”
Near fine.
