Illustrated manuscript on paper. Many fine brush & ink drawings, mostly double-page & enriched with fine wash coloring. 74; 50 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (some worming), new stitching. [Yokkaichi, in today’s Mie prefecture]: after 1793.

This is a record of the travels of Yamanaka Denshirō 山中伝四郎, a wealthy merchant from Yokkaichi, in today’s Mie prefecture, and three friends. His companions were Sonoda Tadajirō 園田忠次郎, Mizutani Tōji 水谷藤治, and Nishimura Shōemon 西村庄右衛門.

Their journey had all the elements of the 18th-century European “grand tour,” with the participants visiting many important temples, cultural sites, and cities before returning home. They left Yokkaichi on 23 September 1793, and their notable stops were Kyoto (where they observed a memorial service at Sairinji temple commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of one of their fathers), Takebi no jinja shrine near Kameyama Castle in Tamba province, the Enryaku ji temple on Mount Hiei, north to Ama no hashidate, the hot springs at Kinosaki, the island of Kannon ura (with its interesting rock formations), Toyooka, a boat trip down the Kakogawa river to the Inland Sea, the Suma dera temple, Wada misaki cape, Mount Maya, Kobe, Fushimi and its sake manufacturers, Amagasaki, Mount Rokkō, Mount Chausu, the great city of Osaka, Shitennō ji temple, Gokokuji temple, and another boat trip on the Yodo river to Kyoto, before finally returning home to Yokkaichi.

The fine richly colored paintings depict panoramic landscapes, notable natural wonders, important temple and shrines, maps of their routes, the river journey on the Yodo, a detailed view of the main street of Kinosaki and its hot springs (with prices of lodging, related expenses, accounts of the qualities of the water of each spring, etiquette for bathers, etc.), notable attractions of each place, villages along the routes and rivers, etc. There are many smaller black & white drawings as well. The author has provided footnotes with considerable detail, historical notes, etc.

Nice condition, but with some worming throughout touching text and images.
