A fine example of a hikifuda woodblock (220 x 320 x 13 mm.), advertising a patent medicine sedative for women.

[Japan]: late Edo.

Carved on one side, this woodblock was created to print a hikifuda 引札, a handbill, flyer, or inserted advertisement for stores or products. Our example advertises a pharmacological product, Junki seiryōgan 順気清涼丸, a well-known patent medicine that would calm and refresh women. The text states that this is based on a Chinese medicine. The name of the manufacturer has been deliberately scraped off. A version of this medicine is still manufactured today.

Fine example.
