A fine example of a hikifuda woodblock (167 x 293 x 20 mm.), advertising a medicine for children.
[Japan]: late Edo.
Carved on one side, this woodblock was created to print a hikifuda 引札, a handbill, flyer, or inserted advertisement for stores or products. Our example advertises the pharmacological product Kanryōen 肝涼圓, an extremely popular pediatric medicine manufactured in Kyoto by the Matsumura Itteidō Co. 松村一定堂. The medicine cured stomach aches and a host of other illnesses of children.
Our woodblock contains a small ireki 入れ木, crafted to update, correct, or sometimes censor the text. Our ireki contains two kanji characters, inserted on the block. The right-hand side of the woodblock lists the distributors of the medicine in northern Japan.
Fine example.
