The Blue Stamp of Yves Klein (6-31 January 1996).

Black & white illus. Title-leaf, perforated sheet of blue waxed paper, [30] pp. 4to, gold craft paper covers with imitation blue stamp adhered to upper cover, plastic spiral-bound. San Francisco: Stamp Art Gallery, 1996.

Rare Stamp Art Gallery exhibition catalogue on Yves Klein’s famous painted Timbre bleu. Several sympathetic imitations and homages to the stamp are cleverly placed on and in the catalogue. There is an essay by John Held, Jr. and an interview that he conducted with art historian and Klein expert Sidra Stich. The curators have included reproductions of correspondence they received as they made inquiries leading up to the show; they consulted Pierre Restany, Stich, Steven Leiber, and Sophie Nagiscarde of the Musée de la Poste, among others.

From the introduction by Picasso Gaglione: “In 1957 Yves Klein introduced the ‘Artiststamp’ into the Eternal Network, with his mailing of the Blue Stamp. This activity is considered one of the first ‘Postal Art Actions.’ He is now known throughout the Network as ‘Saint Yves, the Patron Saint of Artiststamps…

“This exhibition is dedicated to the unknown French postal worker who illegally hand cancelled the Blue Stamp in 1957 using official government cancellation rubber stamps.”

A fine copy.
