Mail Art: 1 / 5 / 1983 Project.

Illus. throughout (many in color). 96 pp. Oblong 8vo, blue cloth with red lettering. The Hague: The Netherlands Postal and Telecommunications Services, 1986.

A playful and scarce mail art catalogue, published by the Dutch postal service; we locate two copies outside of the Netherlands. It begins with a Foreword and essay by famed Dutch designer Paul Hefting, known as “Mr. Stamp.” Ulises Carrión’s “Mail Art and the Big Monster” is re-published at the end.

The original project was initiated by artist Piet Franzen of Haarlem, from page 39: “At the end of 1982 and beginning of 1983 Franzen asked Mail Art artists all over the world to send him their reactions to the celebration of May Day 1983 and to let him know what they planned to do on that day. A number of the hundreds of replies he received to his question are illustrated here as a Mail Art project. The choice of illustrations was governed by the desire for great diversity.”

The responses of the following artists are reproduced herein: Eduardo Kac, Nam Soonchu, Edgardo-Antonio Vigo, Paolo Scirpa, Graciela Gutierrez Marx, Ingrid Weiss, Jürgen Olbrich, Denis Muzzi, Witold S. Kozak, Claudio Goulart, etc.

Near fine; upper cover a little bowed.
