Minkan shobyō ryōjihō 民間諸病療治法 [Introduction to the Method of Diagnosing & Treatment of Diseases].

Four woodcut portrait frontis. 3 p.l., 76 pp., one leaf of colophon. Small 8vo, orig. printed boards, orig. cloth spine. Tokyo: Shiseidō, 1880.

First edition and rare. Matsumoto (1832-1907), studied rangaku medicine in Nagasaki, where he learned both Western medicine and the new art of photography. He served as personal physician to the final shogun and, in the Meiji era, established a Western-style hospital in Tokyo. He was made Surgeon General of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1873.

This book was issued by the publishing arm of Shiseidō, which started in 1872 as the first Western-style pharmacy in Japan and grew into the enormous international cosmetics company. The four frontispiece portraits are of Matsumoto Jun; Sato Shōchū (1827-82), who also founded a Western-style hospital in Tokyo; Hayashi Kenkai (1844-82), military doctor; and Sato Susumu (1845-1921), military surgeon.
