Fall, Bas Jan Ader.

Black & white illus. throughout. [48] pp. Square 4to (190 x 191 mm.), printed wrappers, staple-bound. N.p.: Self-published, [1970].

A very rare Bas Jan Ader (1942-75) artist’s book, self-published in an unknown edition size. Stills from his legendary Fall I and Fall II (both 1970) are reproduced within. Our copy is in remarkably fine condition. WorldCat records just five institutional examples in North America.

❧ Moeglin-Delcroix, Esthétique du Livre d’Artiste: Une Introduction à l’art contemporain (2nd ed.: 2012), p. 291 (in trans.): “Fall (1970), in which Ader publishes a series of stills of his voluntary falls (rolling from the rooftop of his home in California, then hurling himself on a bicycle into an Amsterdam canal). The reader is certainly aware of what has happened, but nothing happens in the course of reading. The most satisfying books on performances or actions remain those which deliberately place themselves outside of their unfolding, while reporting on their before (the plan) or the after (the results)”.
