Ruschas with a Sense of Place

A group of seven artist’s books from the collection of museum director Michael E. Shapiro.

7 vols. in various formats, all printed softcover. Los Angeles: 1969-72.

A distinctive assemblage of seven Ruscha artist’s books (four first editions); each book has a small hole punched through the upper-left corner because they were displayed at a 1974 Hamilton College exhibition (3-23 January 1974) and, per Ruscha’s instructions, all of the books were to be handled by attendees, not stored behind vitrines. Among the most iconic examples of artist’s books, these books come from the collection of Michael E. Shapiro (b. 1949), former director of the High Museum of Art. Shapiro was a Hamilton undergraduate at the time of the exhibition and seems to have played a part in its organization. He also held leadership positions at The Saint Louis Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Ruscha books in this collection are as follows (with Engberg & Phillpot nos.):

Twentysix Gasoline Stations (3rd printing: 1969; 1/3000 copies) B1, small coffee stain to lower cover

Various Small Fires (2nd printing: 1970, 1/3000 copies) B2, orig. glassine jacket (small tear to glassine in upper left corner)

Some Los Angeles Apartments (2nd printing: 1970; 1/3000 copies) B3, orig. glassine jacket (small tear to glassine in upper left corner and minor staining to the glassine)

Crackers (1st ed.: 1969; 1/5000 copies) B10, with white dust-jacket, title printed in red (wear at head of spine and tear from hole)

Real Estate Opportunities (1st ed.: 1970; 1/4000 copies) B12, orig. glassine jacket (small tear to glassine in upper left corner)

Records (1st ed.: 1971; 1/2000 copies) B15, near fine

Colored People (1st ed.: 1972; 1/4065 copies) B16, (some staining to upper cover)

In nice condition but for the artist-ordered holes to each volume.
