Pictures of the Real World (In Real Time).

Many color illus. (one folding). 4to, gray printed wrappers, title on spine. Dijon: Temps Réel, 1995.

A scarce On Kawara (29,771 days, 1933-2014) exhibition catalogue, curated by Bob Nickas. The show was held in five locations: Paula Cooper Gallery, New York (11 February-12 March 1994); Le Consortium, Dijon (10 September-22 October 1994); Le Capitou, centre d’art contemporain, Fréjus (19 November 1994-8 January 1995); Städtische Galerie Göppingen (22 January-26 February 1995); Galleria Massimo de Carlo (6 April-13 May 1995).

The innovative concept juxtaposed Kawara’s “Date Paintings” with photographs from the same year by Graham, Arbus, Winogrand, Huebler, Friedlander, Clark, Eggleston, Goldin, Hujar, Groover, Campus, Welling, Sherman, S. Levine, Prince, Bloom, Lawler, Samore, Coplans, Ess, A. Serrano, Robbins, Dunning, Z. Leonard, Gonzales-Torres, Di Corcia, C. Ray, R. Barry, and D. Lyon. Each work is illustrated.

Nickas’s short essay “Picturing the Element of Time” explains that he was inspired by Again and Against, an earlier Kawara exhibition held in multiple locations for which 24 works by 24 different artists each iteration were displayed next to Kawara’s paintings. He writes: “The pictures brought here with On Kawara’s Date Paintings create a time line and, unavoidably, a history of American photography since the mid-60s.” In 1994, Nickas conceived a Kawara show where the paintings were paired with excerpts from texts written in the same year.

Near fine, a fascinating and nicely illustrated catalogue.
