Item ID: 8108 Virtuosen vor dem Berg (2 August-2 September 1991). Martin KIPPENBERGER.

Virtuosen vor dem Berg (2 August-2 September 1991).

Color and black & white illus. throughout. 36 pp. 8vo, pictorial semi-stiff covers with flaps. [Frankfurt]: Galerie Grässlin-Ehrhardt, 1991.

A very rare exhibition catalogue, designed by Martin Kippenberger to imitate a Baedeker guide. We find just two copies in North America. According to Koch, it was produced in an edition of around 1000 copies.

“In 1991 Martin Kippenberger was teaching at the Städel Art School in Frankfurt. Virtuosen vor dem Berg [Virtuosi Before the Mountain], created in collaboration with the ‘Kippenberger Class’ (Matti Braun, Andreas Höhne, Adam Kuczynski, Martin Liebscher, Tobias Rehberger, Matthias Schaufler, Markus Schneider, Tatjana Steiner, Ronald Wullems, and Christian Zickler) is a travelogue about the highs and lows of the art market in the form of a Baedeker travel guide…

“It was published to accompany the exhibition Virtuosen ihrer Zeit. 2. Semester Kippenberger [Virtuosi of their Time 2nd Semester Kippenberger] at the Galerie Grässlin-Erhardt from 2 August to 2 September 1991. In the game of Mau-Mau that was played for the production costs, Martin Kippenberger beat Thomas Grässlin, as the back cover flap shows.”–Koch.

A fine and fresh copy.
