[From upper wrapper]: Books, Special Editions, Records, Periodicals: Catalogue No. 7.

Many text illus. & ads. 46 pp. Large 4to (273 x 212 mm.), orig. pictorial wrappers (spine faintly sunned), staple-bound. Toronto: [1980].

A rare Art Metropole catalogue, with an illustration from Joseph Beuys: Multiples on the upper wrapper. The company’s archivist Tim Guest writes on the inside of the upper wrapper: “The titles in this catalogue can be divided into two loose categories: books by artists and books which describe artists’ work.

The latter category includes exhibition catalogues and critical texts, publications which complement or extend the discourse of particular work. In choosing titles, our bias is toward contemporary art in non-traditional formats.

Artists’ books are a more difficult category to define. These publications fall outside the tradition of either literature or the ‘illustrated book’, and rather than being about art, they are works of art in themselves…

These books are not designed as precious objects to be bought, sold, and revered. Rather they exist simply as information for distribution, designed to be intimate, informal, low-cost, and accessible.”

The catalogue features an outstanding and wide array of artists’ publications, many of which are now very scarce and sought after. Many of these works were offered for the first time in this catalogue, and demonstrate Art Metropole’s influence in the popularization of artists’ books and publications.

In near fine condition; faint browning due to the quality of the newsprint used.
