An important and rare document of Printed Matter’s early efforts to champion the relevance and accessibility of artists’ books. The store’s staff, Nancy Linn (director), Nan Becker, and Mike Glier, compiled this starter collection of 200 books, which they describe on the upper wrapper. The books could be purchased en bloc for $1300, in a 10-book sample for $50, or individually.

From the upper wrapper: “As we prepare for the 80’s, it is time to review the first years of artists’ book publishing. Artists’ books are not coffee table editions about artwork; they are, instead, original works of art in multiple form. Most of our books were produced in the 1970’s, a period of art history that is notable for exploration of new forms and materials. The 2000+ bookworks produced in the last decade are the founders of a movement, many of which will become classics of contemporary art. The sheer volume of work, however, makes it difficult to grasp the genre in its entirety and to appreciate it in detail. Thus, HEART was conceived. Selected by the Board of Directors and staff of Printed Matter, Inc., HEART is a collection of artists’ books that are excellent representatives of the field. As an aid to museums, libraries, and private collectors, HEART is a seed collection encompassing the many facets of the artists’ book movement…HEART is not documentation of contemporary art, it is contemporary art, and will serve as an invaluable primary resource.”

This listing of artists’ publications includes a number that are now highly sought after and scarce. We note the works of Acconci, Acker, Applebroog, Baldessari, Barry, Bochner, Brouwn, Buren, Darboven, Constance de Jong, Feldmann, Gilbert and George, Glier, Guerrilla Art Action Group, Hendricks, Holzer, Huebler, Kaprow, Lawler, LeWitt, Lippard, Long, Joan Lyons, Matta-Clark, Messager, Nannucci, Nauman, Prince, Ruscha, Siegelaub, Steir, ZTuttle, Weiner, Martha Wilson, etc., etc.

Near fine; due to the poor quality of the newsprint used, there is the slightest bit of browning.
