The Bibliography of the Bible: The Earliest Monograph

[22] leaves. Small 4to, attractive antique calf, sides & spine gilt. [Mühlhausen: A. Hantzsch], 1591.

First edition of the first monograph devoted to the bibliography of editions of the Bible; this is a very rare book with no copy in North America. A brief list of Bible editions had appeared at the beginning of G. Theophilus’s Catalogus Autorum Omnium… (1564), which is essentially a bibliography of Bible commentaries.

Zannach’s work lists about 900 editions of the Bible. “The Bibliotheca theologica of Jacob Zannach (1591), appears to be the first Biblical bibliography. Based on Gesner and on the Frankfort fair catalogues, it sets out the bare titles of a considerable number of works. I have not seen a copy of it.”–Besterman, The Beginnings of Systematic Bibliography, p. 27 & no. XL. Begun by Theophilus and Zannach, bibliographies of Bible editions culminated in Darlow and Moule’s great work in the 20th century.

Zannach, a native of Bautzen, was a Protestant writer and publisher in Zerbst.

Fine copy. Trivial marginal worming.

❧ Besterman, A World Bibliography of Bibliographies, col. 771. Peignot, p. 26. For Theophilus’s list, see Breslauer & Folter, Bibliography, 23.
