This catalogue, addressed to Steven Leiber, begins with an Introduction by director David Dean much more cheerful than the previous year’s. He also mentions exhibitions and talks which have occurred in the past year. This is followed by a listing of fundraising “Artists’ Projects” by Baldessari, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Kippenberger, Andres Serrano, Barbara Bloom, and Yoko Ono. Cynthia Chris has written the catalogue’s essay, entitled “It’s A Whole New World: Recent Trends in Artists’ Publications.” As in previous catalogues, there is a section called “How to Use the Printed Matter Catalogue.”

The very interesting first portion of the catalogue is devoted to artists’ books from Eastern and Central Europe, with works by Olga Ast, Balazs Czeizel, Goran Djordjevic, Zbigniew Gostomski, Vsevolod Nekrasov (collaborating with Telfer Stokes), Igor Oresic, Maria Jastrzebska, Andrej Tisma, Victoria Vesna, etc.

The catalogue continues with thematic portions devoted to collaborative projects, and anthologies. The new artists’ books offered include projects created by Sally Alatalo, Molly Barker, Christa Black, Christophe Boutin, Marie Paule Cassagne, Joe Coleman, Jorge Colombo, Meg Cranston, Peggy Doody, Nib Geebles, Coco Gordon, John Greyson, Danny Hobart, Leon Johnson, Andrea Kahn, Kerry Kehoe, Janice Krasnow, Christina Kubisch, Dane La Chiusa, Nancy Linn, Joyce Lyon, Vanessa Milio, Paul Milone, Andy Nukes, Jean Michel Othoniel, Craig Pleasants, Bern Porter, Andrei Rabodzeenko, Marilyn R. Rosenberg, Eva Maria Schon, Joyce Cutler Shaw, Alan Sondheim, Athena Tacha, Ho Tam, David Thorne, Martha Wilson, Dale Wittig, Christopher Wool, etc. Subsequent sections are “Fluxus and Related Publications”; publications from the Visual Studies Workshop, Imschoot, Uitgevers, Dia Center for the Arts; periodicals, issues of Buzz Spector and Reagan Upshaw’s journal “Whitewalls”; audioworks, videotapes, and computer publications. Each item is concisely described. At the end are two order forms and advertisements.

Near fine copy with a special provenance. Leiber often cited Printed Matter’s catalogues in his own.
