Catalogue d’une Collection d’Estampes rares et précieuses, composant le Cabinet de… Dont la Vente après décès se fera le Vendredi 23 Mars 1810…en sa maison, rue du Bacq, no. 86.

12 pp. 8vo (199 x 134 mm.), attractive modern marbled wrappers. Paris: Bénard & Narjot, 1810.

A very scarce catalogue, with nearly all prices in a contemporary hand, dispersing the collection of prints assembled by the philosophe and disciple of Diderot. Naigeon (1738-1810), a professed atheist, editor of a large number of clandestine works, and translator of Greek and Roman texts, was a close friend of Diderot and d’Holbach, editing many of their books.

This catalogue lists 54 lots, with prints by Audran, An. Carracci, Desnoyers, van Dyck, Poilly, Rembrandt, Edelinck, Nanteuil, etc. Lot 48 comprises a portrait drawing of Diderot by Vanloo and an engraved portrait of the same by Saint Aubin (probably Augustin). As noted on the final page, Naigeon’s library was sold by Debure from 25 April to 2 May of the same year.

Fine copy. From the Bibliothèque Heim. WorldCat records only one example in North America.

❧ Lugt 7734. “[Naigeon] studied to be an artist, learning design at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, painting from one of the Vanloos, and sculpture from Jean Baptiste Lemoyne, but by the 1760s he had renounced this calling.”–Kafker & Kafker, The Encyclopedists as Individuals: A Biographical Dictionary of the Authors of the Encyclopédie (1988), p. 278.
