Shinjutsu hiyo [Secret Method of Acupuncture].

[Edited by Kensaku Nakamura]. Many illus. (mostly full-page) in the text. 35; 33; 44 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. pale blue wrappers (wrappers & labels somewhat worn & stained), new stitching. Osaka, Edo, & Kyoto: 1865.

First edition of this very rare work on acupuncture; it is considered to be amongst the most important books on the subject of the period. Sakai (1815-78), was a medical practitioner and known as the most accomplished acupuncturist of his time. He learned acupuncture from Dr. Komori in Kyoto, who instructed his student to insert the needles at different angles from the norm. The present work was edited by Sakai’s student Kensaku Nakamura.

This work discusses and illustrates the pressure points, how to use the needles to treat various diseases, and the use of herbs according to the teachings of the Shanghan Lun and the Jin Gui Yao Lue [Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet], both classic texts of ancient traditional Chinese medicine. Many pharmaceutical recipes are provided.

The illustrations are entirely modernized, quite different from the traditional woodcuts one finds in earlier acupuncture books. They depict in an extremely clear way the pressure points, how to find them, and how to insert them in a “sideways” fashion.

Fine set. Some worming, limited to the blank margins. Only one copy is listed in WorldCat.
