Art for All – Assembling – Zusammenstellung – Assemblage – Assemblaggio, A Catalogue Sponsored by Rose Holtz USA.

Many black & white illus. Ca. 320 unnumbered pages. Photocopied paper (280 x 215 mm.), mounted with a metal bracket in the orig. manila folder, title written in blue marker on upper cover & spine. [From title page & spine]: San Francisco: S. Leiber, 1994.

An uncommon Steven Leiber (1957-2012) catalogue, which describes more than 700 items, with most illustrations on versos. Leiber, the esteemed artists’ books dealer, collector, expert on artists’ ephemera, was famous for his highly original “catalogues” — i.e. baseball cards, a single sheet of paper and matches, exposures on a negative film roll. The present catalogue is divided by alphabetical tabs and is housed in a simple manila folder. Leiber’s descriptions are typically well-researched and thorough, even for items below $50. They provide a wealth of knowledge on Fluxus and conceptual art, especially about artists such as Daniel Buren, Christian Boltanski, Joseph Beuys, John Baldessari, Ulises Carrion, Robert Crumb, Hane Darboven, Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Donald Judd, LeWitt, Roy Lichtenstein, George Maciunas, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Rauschenberg, Ruscha, Buzz Spector, Richard Tuttle, Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, etc.

Fine copy of a rarity, edges of manila folder slightly creased.

❧ From the New York Times obituary–“As a dealer, he became known for the specially designed catalogs he began publishing in 1992. Each had a different design that paid homage to the material on offer or even mimicked it. One catalog was in the form of a cardboard box of library cards; another, a roll of undeveloped film; a third was mail art — a series of postcards mailed daily for a month.”.
