Printed Matter’s 1994 catalogue consisting of 17 pages of new titles; eight pages of back list items; works from the Coracle Press; Flip Books; “Fluxus and Related Materials”; “Reflux Editions” (“continuations of the classic Fluxus editions using some vintage materials from George Maciunas’ original printings”; “Networkers, Plagiarists, Artstrikers, and other Aggressive Cultural Workers”; works from the Nexus Press; works from Sara Ranchouse Publishing; “Source Books”; issues of Edit DeAk and Walter Robinson’s Art-Rite Magazine; Periodicals; Audioworks; Video; Computer Publications; Publications from Dia Center for the Arts; and New Dia Titles & Dia Backlist. It concludes with an “Artists’ Projects” section which advertises work by John Baldessari, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, and Martin Kippenberger, in addition to the “Artists’ Bookplates” of several artists, which will be sold as part of Printed Matter’s fund-raising efforts.

This catalogue opens with a letter from David Dean, Printed Matter’s director, who asks for the organization’s supporters to donate to make up for reduced government support and declining sales resulting in a deficit of over $100,000. Max Schumann, the bookstore manager and current executive director, wrote the introduction, which is followed by an article entitled “Neo-Natural: Scientific Issues in Artists’ Books” by Anne Kugler.

The covers bear David Thorne’s art project contrasting the divergent reactions to the bombing of the World Trade Center and the United States’ missile attack on Baghdad in 1993. On the inside front wrapper Thorne asks: “When is a bombing not one? There I go again, asking the obvious question. How many times do I have to repeat it?”

A very good copy addressed to Steven Leiber (1957-2012), the pioneering art and artists’ books dealer.
