Two very rare auction catalogues, the first describing a famed natural history cabinet, the second an impressive library specializing in books on the same subject. Savalete (1727-64), a fermier général under Louis XV and son of the wealthy merchant Charles Savalete, owned one of the finest cabinets of the mid-18th century, especially rich in mineralogy and instruments. Savalete’s collection of minerals was acquired at this sale by Claude Varenne de Béost (1722-88), another great collector, based in Dijon.

I. The first catalogue consists of 686 lots of minerals, rings, engraved stones, diamonds, other precious jewels, machines, a pharmaceutical cabinet, jars with preserved samples of plants and animals (even dragon’s blood), agricultural tools, cannons, porcelains, and petrified wood. There is a useful table of contents at the beginning and a list of Rémy’s catalogues from 1755 to 1764 at the end.

II. Describes a fine library consisting of many of the great 17th- and 18th-century works in natural history, especially related to ornithology, botany, ichthyology, zoology, etc. This catalogue ends with the sale schedule.

Very good copies of two extremely rare catalogues. We locate no example of either in North America. Lugt calls for a frontispiece in the first catalogue but in the vast majority of copies it was not bound in. Stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of first title-page.
