A Map of the Land of Love

Beschreibung des Reichs der Liebe, mit beigefügter Landcharte. Ein Zweyter Versuch im Satz und Druck geographischer Charten, durch die Buchdruckerkunst, von J.G.I.B.

Folding printed map. 8 pp. Large 4to, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1777.

First edition of this quite fascinating cartographical work, which includes a specimen of the author’s second experiment in map printing. Earlier in the same year, Breitkopf (1719-94), the eminent printer, type-founder, and bookseller, published another slight work entitled Ueber den Druck der geographischen Charten which described his invention for printing maps with movable type. “He claimed to have been the inventor of map printing by the use of types, or what is known as ‘typometry.’ William Haas, a type-founder of Basle, appears to have previously published a method somewhat similar, but Breitkopf had been experimenting on the matter for some twelve years previously, and it was only his dissatisfaction with the result obtained that induced him to keep his achievements to himself.”–Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81.

This is his second attempt for which he has printed a charming double-page map of the “Das Reich der Liebe” or “Land of Love,” entirely from printing types and ornaments. The towns and regions all have delightful names referring to desire, youth, and pleasure. We learn from the text this was written, drawn, composed, and printed within three days, on the occasion of a wedding.

A fine copy, without the usual foxing, of a most interesting work. I believe the map is occasionally hand-colored.
