Van Schorel, seigneur de Wilryck (1716-73), served as mayor of Antwerp. He was actively involved in the artistic life of the city and in the early 1740s played an important role in the reorganization and financial support of the city’s Academie voor Schoone Kunsten. Van Schorel formed one of the largest gatherings of Rubens’s oil sketches in the southern Netherlands in the eighteenth century.
